Pediatric Cancer Care
Cancer. The word alone can be frightening. It’s even more frightening for families facing childhood cancer. Cancer affects children differently, and kids have different needs. There are also special concerns, such as physical and mental development, education, psychological impact and much more.
Experienced, compassionate care for children.
At Austin Cancer Centers and Georgetown Cancer Center in Central Texas, we provide the concern, caring and experienced know-how necessary to help kids and their families cope with — and triumph over — cancer. Our team was the first in Austin to offer a dedicated pediatric radiation oncology program, thereby giving kids access to treatments that had been helping adults for decades. Over the years, we’ve helped thousands of children, and we understand the cancers that commonly affect children, which include cancers of the:
- Brain & spine
- Germ cell tumors (gonadal, extragonadal)
- Immune cells (histiocytosis)
- Bone marrow (leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome)
- Lymphatic system (lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease)
- Bone (osteosarcoma, Ewing’s sarcoma)
- Retina
- Muscles/soft tissue (rhabdomyosarcoma)
- Kidney (Wilms’ tumor)
- Nerves (neuroblastoma, neurofibromatosis)
The understanding that children — & their families — need.
Our pediatric oncology professionals also understand children, how to interact with them, which treatments work best for them and what to do to meet their needs and we are considerate of the needs of each child’s family. For example, we have implemented new capabilities in Austin so parents can avoid driving long distances, which can create additional hardships.
We care for children as if they were our own.
As parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents, kids are an enormous part of our lives... and of why we are personally committed to pediatric cancer-care excellence. We are one of very few options in the Austin area for pediatric cancer care. From focused pediatric treatment and care coordination to a network of services and information resources for kids and their families, our cancer centers are both experienced in and dedicated to helping children win against cancer.
