Gamma Knife®: Precision without an Incision

Gamma Knife® is a state-of-the-art neurosurgery tool that has become the preferred treatment for tumors, nerve disorders, and vascular abnormalities in the brain.  Gamma Knife uses high-dose controlled radiation to target tumors with scalpel-like precision—but without the scalpel and without an incision.  Gamma Knife spares healthy tissue and can be used for deep tumors that otherwise are inoperable.  Because there is no “open skull surgery,” patients can usually immediately resume their regular activities.

Gamma Knife is used to treat certain types of  brain tumors, many which may have been considered inoperable because of a deep location in the brain.  Gamma Knife is also a treatment for vascular malformations, pain disorders, Parkinson’s disease, essential tremors, epilepsy, and trigeminal neuralgia.  Gamma Knife delivers high-dose radiation from 201 angles that all converge on one point to deliver precise effective treatment.  In the vast majority of cases, Gamma Knife dissolves abnormalities or shrinks and stops a tumor from growing.

Prior to treatment, computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and angiography are used to create an accurate visualization of the tumor.  Computers are used to help formulate an individualized precise dose of treatment. A stabilizing head frame is fabricated for use during the procedure. The procedure causes minimal discomfort.

Gamma Knife is usually an outpatient procedure, but it may require an overnight stay.  Because there is no incision and the skull and brain are not “opened” for surgery, Gamma Knife does not carry the risks of bleeding, infection, or a prolonged recovery time.  Additionally, Gamma Knife may be used for people who are not otherwise candidates for open neurosurgery.  Further, Gamma Knife is FDA approved—it is not an experimental procedure. Gamma Knife is an advanced tool for neurosurgeons and a "nonsurgical" option for patients, offering effective treatment and hope.
