Diagnosis & Staging
Diagnosis is the first step toward curing cancer. Detecting cancer, identifying how it affects the body, and classifying its type and stage of development are vital to developing a treatment plan that is effective and appropriate for each individual.
Cancer detection is the essential first step.
Surviving cancer starts with early detection, because most cancers are more effectively treated in their earliest stages. That’s why certain individuals are recommended for screening to look for specific types of cancer (breast, prostate, colorectal, etc.). Cancer can also be detected during tests performed to diagnose unexplained symptoms or evaluate other problems.
Before cancer can be treated, it must be understood.
Identifying where in the body the cancer originated helps predict how it may behave. We also must identify its cell type, stage of development and involvement with other tissues and the disease and the effectiveness of treatment must be monitored continually.
A variety of tools for an accurate diagnosis.
Our oncologists work with your cancer-care team to ensure complete diagnosis and staging using:
- PET – Imaging that “sees” the cellular activity of cancer
- CT – Imaging that creates detailed & 3D images of anatomy
- MRI – Imaging that provides excellent detail of soft tissue
- Biopsy – The removal of tissue for direct evaluation
- X-rays
- Physical examination
- Blood tests
