It’s not just a disease. It consumes the patient’s health, spirit, finances and emotional well-being. And it does the same for the patient’s family members. In the decades since I first began practicing cancer medicine, I’ve learned time and time again that the individual’s personal and spiritual commitment to his or her fight against cancer is as important as the treatment itself. For this reason, I perceive my duties as a cancer physician to include not just leading-edge care but also whole-hearted dedication to supporting, guiding, encouraging and — most of all — understanding you.
